Why the Mornington Peninsula is Melbourne's Fishing Backyard
Pete's Take: I learned the hard way in October 2017 that Melbourne fishing doesn't care about your schedule. Standing on a Mornington jetty in a borrowed jacket, I caught nothing for three hours. The next morning, same spot, same bait, I pulled in a 6kg snapper because the wind had swung 15 degrees overnight. That's Port Phillip Bay: subtle and indifferent to your plans.
My first Bass Strait charter was Aug 2019, $500 and a spew bucket. The skipper turned us around after 40 minutes of green water over the bow. Right call. Not for tropical anglers: this is cold-water fishing. If you want coral trout and warm water, book Cairns. Not for anyone who needs guaranteed calm: Melbourne weather switches in 20 minutes and Bass Strait is Bass Strait.
The Mornington Peninsula is the Finger, the protrusion of land that separates Port Phillip Bay from the Bass Strait to Melbourne's south. From Melbourne's CBD, it's roughly a 1.5–2 hour drive to the tip at Portsea, where the Bay meets the Strait. The peninsula gives Melbourne fishers access to two distinct fishing environments within a short drive: the protected waters of Port Phillip Bay on one side, and the open ocean of the Bass Strait on the other.
A Mornington Peninsula fishing charter gives you access to both environments depending on what you're targeting. Port Phillip Bay is the workaday fishery, shallow, consistent, productive. The bay has been described by marine biologists as one of the most rehabilitated marine environments in Australia. Seagrass has returned, fish populations have recovered, and the bay now supports a genuine recreation fishery for snapper, whiting, flathead, and gummy shark.
The Bass Strait, accessed from the ocean side of the peninsula at Portsea, Sorrento, and Stony Point, is a more serious proposition. The strait is notoriously rough, with a 7-metre tidal range and a fetch that runs unbroken from the Southern Ocean. But what comes with that roughness is access to deep-water species: southern bluefin tuna, albacore, king George whiting, and the shark species the strait is famous for.

From the Deck, Family Fishing That Worked
April 2022, I took my mate Dave and his three kids, 7, 10, and 14, out of Rye on a half-day bay charter targeting whiting and flathead. The 7-year-old was nervous about the boat, the 14-year-old was too cool to care, and the 10-year-old was the only one who wanted to fish. The skipper, a bloke who'd been running these waters since before any of the kids were born, handed the 7-year-old a rod with a tiny hook and some squid strips and said 'just drop it over the side and hold on.' Three minutes later the kid was fighting a 35cm whiting with his whole body. His older brother put his phone down and picked up a rod without being asked. By the end of the morning all three of them had landed multiple fish, and the 14-year-old had caught a 42cm flathead that he still has a photo of on his phone. The skipper didn't lecture anyone. He just put rods in hands and let the fish do the teaching.

Pete's Strait Story, The Day Bass Strait Won
May 2021, I booked a southern bluefin tuna charter out of Portsea with a skipper who'd been crossing Bass Strait for 30 years. The forecast was marginal, 15 to 20 knots southwest, swell building to 3 metres, but the skipper said 'we'll have a look.' We cleared Port Phillip Heads at 6:15am and immediately took green water over the bow. For 45 minutes we punched into a head sea that had the boat slamming so hard I thought the hull was going to crack. Two of the four clients were spewing by the 30-minute mark. We made it to the tuna grounds about 18 nautical miles south and fished for exactly 90 minutes, hooked one bluefin that straightened a hook and spat it, lost another at the boat, and landed nothing. The skipper called it at 10am. 'Not our day,' he said. I've been on dozens of charters and that was the only one where the ocean properly beat us. The skipper refunded half the fee without being asked. I've respected him ever since. Sometimes the right call is turning back.
